California recently passed a proposition that immediately outlaws same sex marriage. Since this banning there have been many protests. However, one has to wonder if people actually thought that this wouldn't pass. In 2000, proposition 22 was passed with 64% voting to ban same sex marriage. In May, 2008 4 judges overturned the vote making same sex marriage legal.
I am in no way against gay people, however I believe that marriage is strictly between a man and a woman. By changing the definition of marriage, you have to be open to all kinds of marriage. There are 2 main arguments as to why gay people should be allowed to marry. The first is that everyone deserves the right to be happy and the second is that that gay people should have the same rights to marry just like the heterosexual couples. Both of these arguments are pointless.
Your argument is that everyone deserves to be happy. So if we follow this logic, then why can't we legally allow multiple marriages? Why can't we allow incest? Why can't we allow marriages between people and animals? Why can't we allow people to marry inanimate objects, or any thing else their heart desires? If it's what makes them happy then why not. You find that this argument is hypocritical. If you say everyone deserves the right to be happy then you have to be open to all forms of marriage. Keeping the definition of marriage between a man and a woman keeps this from happening. By having one clear and simple definition of marriage we can keep all this from happening.
Your second argument is that same sex couples should have the same right to marry as heterosexual couples. Where in the constitution does it say that you have the "right" to marry. Marriage is not a right, it is a privilege granted by the state. The U.S constitution does not say that you have the "right" to marry anyone. This makes this argument invalid.
The fact remains that the MAJORITY of california does not want same sex marriage. Earlier this year proposition 22 was wrongfully overturned by 4 judges who by voting to ban something that 64% of california wanted basically said that votes don't mean anything and that the courts will ultimately decide what they think is right for us, not what we think. This was wrongfully overturned and now proposition 8 has been voted on, we will go back to the way things should be. Marriage is between a man and a woman.
